Vistaprint: Making an Impression

Vistaprint. Make an impression.

My daughter, who just turned seven, was interested in giving back to others kids with epilepsy.  It was my idea but she quickly embraced and loved the idea.   As soon as we talked about it and made a plan, I decided we needed business cards and naturally, I turned to Vistaprint given that I've used them before for my printing needs and was very pleased.

For this review, I was provided a complimentary set of my choice of business cards.  I was able to go online and decide which template to use or I could design my own.  The beauty with Vistaprint is you can have nearly all the work done for you or you can be as creative as you like.  The process was quick, easy and painless which given my time crunches, this was essential.  Since I chose a template, all I had to do was fill in the blanks, delete lines I didn't want or add where I wanted text.  It was beyond easy!

Another aspect I like about Vistaprint is they provide complimentary products that completes the package.   When I finished the business cards, I was able to choose from matching letterhead, folders, envelopes, sticky notes, a website, return address labels, note pads, pens, t-shirt, postcards, hats and car door magnets.

Vistaprint is available in a variety of countries so it's not just limited to the US.  This could also be a great feature for global businesses.  Vistaprint is always having sales offering great discounts and free products all the time.

Small Banner Marquee
They have products not only for businesses but also for you.  Whether you are planning a get together or a party, there are invitations, banners, calendars and so much more to choose from.  I bought a welcome home banner for my husband's return from Kuwait two year's ago and still use it every time he has returned.  It's also of great quality and has not faded which is remarkable considering it was outside for over a month on two different occasions.
5" x 7" Photo Flip Books
I received my cards in a very short amount of time, quicker than I had expected and the quality was impeccable.  The paper was durable and had a nice texture.  The print was just as it showed online.  They are perfect for our project and I can't wait to deliver our gift bags to the children at the local hospital with Vistaprint's business cards I received.

Caricature Products

Since this is the third time I've used Vistaprint, I highly recommend their services as each time I had placed an order, the quality was amazing.

How You Can Help Send 250 Underprivileged Kids to Camp Summer Stars

Here is a chance you can help send 250 underprivileged kids to the nation’s leading performing arts summer camp.   Summer Stars (www.summerstars.org), one of the largest non-profit summer programs in the country, works each year to send hundreds of urban youth to a free, ten-day performing arts and music education excursion.  The program – completely free to campers – relies entirely on donations for funding, and this year they are competing in the Pepsi Refresh Everything project (www.refresheverything.com/summerstars) for a chance to win a grant for this year’s program.

Each day, supporters can cast a fresh vote to help the Summer Stars cause, and they hope you will take a moment to help them with their campaign to vote and improve the lives of urban youth for another year.  Founded in 1999 as the Britney Spears Camp for the Performing Arts, and later the American Idol Camp, Summer Stars was renamed in 2006 as the leading non-profit summer arts program in the country.  Entering their 11th year in bringing art, music and nature to children who need it most, they hope you might join our cause.

They need as many votes as possible by April 30, 2010 to secure the grant we are seeking.
You can vote every 24 hours and help make a huge change in the lives of our campers.  To learn more, visit these links:

10 Little Things that Lead to a Happier, Healthier You

Eating healthier and exercising is always a great idea and unfortunately for some of us, ding ding ding .. me, it's not always easy to follow.  Life is too busy and hectic which allows for an easy out to grabbing that fast food or not having time to exercise.  Thanks to TwitterMoms and Tropicana Trop 50, you can learn more and even sign up to join the Spring Renewal program and add your 10 Little Things that Lead to a Happier, Healthier You by clicking here.

What is the Spring Renewal program?  It's a great way to start spring on a new foot!  By incorporating just 10 little things, it can lead you to a happier, healthier you.  I thought about these 10 little things as when my husband leaves for Kuwait on April 29th for a year, I've decided it would be my major kick off point to pulling it together and getting healthier once and for all.  Here is my plan for those 10 little things:

  1. Ride my bike for a brisk 15 minutes at interval levels.  One minute fast, two minutes a little slower and I will repeat until the 15 minutes is up.  This will be a quick picker up to get me going.
  2. Eat a fruit or vegetable (or both) at every meal.  Proper nutrition is lacking in my household and if I lead my example, we'll all get there.  Every day, I will continue to look for ways to eat better and eliminate junk food.
  3. Read for 30 minutes a day to my kids.  This will not only promote great reading habits but it will teach them good habits.
  4. I will read my Bible every day as there is nothing more soothing for the soul then good scripture.
  5. Rotate prayer at meal time with my kids to teach them gratitude.
  6. Give a moment of praise to my children every day.  Strong self-esteem is essential to those growing years and when I see a smile on their face, it brings one to mine.
  7. Call or write one person every day to bring a "hey, I'm here and I'm thinking of you" smile to their face.  Showing a loved one that you care can make the difference to anyone.
  8. Drink my daily intake of water and avoid the sodas.  This every day practice can lead to healthier bodies which ultimately affects happiness.
  9. Smile, smile smile!  Make smiling a habit and if necessary, I'll sign up for a joke a day to keep me laughing!  Laughing is essential to health and this is something I'm not lacking thanks to my kids!
  10. Even though in reverse order, hugging!  Hugging is another great way to bring love and warmth to one another.  Hugging shows affection and comfort.  I always hug my children once a day.

Top 5 Things that Would Make Volunteering Easier

I am a member of my daughter's school's PTO and I do volunteer my time as I can.  My daughter's teacher also solicits volunteers for a number of events throughout the school year.  What I found different about Georgia schools versus Indiana schools are the amount of volunteers they seek to help not only for the PTO but in the classroom.  I think it's an excellent source of donated help that increases the quality of education.  The first day I signed my daughter up for school, I was in shock as they didn't charge fees or book rental.  My entire life in Indiana both with myself and my oldest always dealt with high fees associated with attending school.  Georgia does not charge this which was a complete surprise.  Given that and knowing how the PTO relies so heavily on events to get donations, I felt obligated to step up to the plate.  Our fearless PTO leader, Teri, is a motivational, fun and inviting person so that helps!

Because I do work, it's really hard to be able to reach out to the classroom as I would like.  Every event is for the day hours which conflicts with my work schedule.  I often see e-mail requests or paper requests seeking help and when TwitterMoms partnered with Jooners, I thought this would be a great idea for my daughter's school or any event that seeks volunteers.

  1. Tracking Volunteers:  One of the hardest aspects of volunteering or organizing an event is tracking the volunteers.  Jooners is a time saver for all because it allows an updated sign up sheet 24/7 with no manual tracking of volunteers needed. Anyone who has ever organized knows that it's trying just keeping track of who has volunteered and for what.  I love this aspect of an easy, one stop shop for all that allows me to stay up to date on the event and it confirms what I'm volunteering for.
  2. Numerous Notifications: e-mail traffic can become cumbersome when there are multiple changes and updates to an event.  I keep separate folders for certain e-mails to allow better organization but again with Jooners, it's easy peasy!
  3. Organizing!  This part can be a nightmare if you are the one to organize the event!  Trying to craft the flyer just right or the e-mail can take time but if you have a tool such as Jooners, it's an easy four step process to create, send and track.
  4. Donations:  An easier way to donate would be nice as well.  With Jooners, the organizer can set up the events and seek donations online via Amazon.  I set up a trial one for my daughter's Angels4Epilepsy project just to test it out and it literally took four steps for Jooners.  There were additional steps to set up my Amazon account but it was all very easy.  To have one place to not only sign up but to provide a donation would definitely save time and hassle.
  5. Time:  Having the time to donate time or money is always an issue.  The one stop place to see everything in one place would make volunteering easy.  Volunteers gain free access to the event they were invited to and while you are there, you can add anything else that might conflict to your activity thus making it easier to volunteer.

Overall, my post was originally going to go in one direction focusing on volunteering and making it easier but it quickly turned into an endorsement for Jooners.  As a person involved in the PTO maintaining the PTO website and volunteering for other events, I see such great benefits from this service.  It does cost but it's only $19.95 a year.

If you are an organizer, you should check out the 30 day free trial.  If you aren't and know of an organizer, you should tell them about it.  Don't forget that Jooners is suitable for any event to include family reunions, book clubs, garage sales and so much more.

Disclosure:
This post is part of a blogging contest from the TwitterMoms community. There is a chance this post could be randomly selected to win a $50 Amazon gift card, so wish me luck! For more details, you can view the contest page here (http://icomp.ly/Jooners).

A Most Vivid Day by Justin Young Book Review

A Most Vivid Day!

A Most Vivid Day by Justin Young is a delightful book about a little black bat who encounters colors for the first time.  The author, Justin Young, takes an interesting spin on life as a bat and how they don't see colors due to their sleep habits.   It's a great story filled with new revelations, greedy animals and initiative to teach a valuable lesson.  This isn't your ordinary children's book and was very entertaining.  The illustrations are colorful and beautiful and capture the attention of all ages.

Justin Young studied fine art and printmaking in Seoul and eventually moved to New York study to study toy design.  He now resides in California and has worked as a fine artist, graphic designer, photographer and illustrator.

I would recommend A Vivid Day for the creativeness of turning something like a sunrise into such a fun experience with children.  Mr. Young has a very creative imagination to write such a fun book with equally wonderful illustrations to accompany it.  It's truly a must have!

Making Money From Blogging and the Internet

I've seen other blog entries on making money from blogging so I wanted to provide my summation of what I earn and how you can earn as well.

My Points - This is a great program if you shop online, play games or complete surveys.  You get points for many activities and if you buy online, you really can rack up points fast.  Last December, I had enough to buy $150 in gift cards and I have another $50 card waiting to choose from.

Search & Win

Swagbucks - Swagbucks is similar to My Points but I mostly use it to conduct my internet searches from.  You would be surprised at how fast the point rack up and you can choose their gifts or gift cards and you can enter giveaways and sweepstakes for me.  Just click the icon above to sign up if you won't have a Swagbucks account yet.

My Coke Rewards - drink a lot of Coke?  Sign up for My Coke Rewards and exchange all those Coke rewards for prizes and gift cards.  If you don't want to exchange them for something for yourself, you can donate them to your school as well.  They are having a special sweepstakes for Disneyland right now.

Zazzle - are you creative?  You can earn great money by creating cards, bumper stickers, shirts and so much more.  I got involved during the political season two year's ago and expanded to making business cards and invitations.  I've made almost $3,000 so far.  It's easy and it's free!

Google Affiliate - If you have a blog, you might as well sign up for ads to get a few extra bucks.  I've not had big success with this one yet as I only have about $15 sitting in the account but eventually it will add up and it might be useful at the right time.

DisneyStore.com

Commission Junction and Sharesale - this is a big one if you can market the retailers correctly.  I've read a lot about utilizing the links especially word links in your attempts at earning money.  It's not all just about the ads you place on your blog as you can see, I have a lot as well as my sponsor ads which I receive nothing for it.  If you are serious about earning some of the affiliate money, try writing posts that showcases something about one of your retailers while using the image html codes as well as word links to add exposure.

WB Word - this is a program that I'm not quite sure about as I've done three campaigns for them and felt the on two of the three, I did everything I was suppose to do and more to promote the Alvin and Chipmunks campaign but according to them, I missed something so I didn't get paid.  On the other campaign I did.  You get $50 to successfully conduct a campaign for them that may involve a blog post, a Facebook post, Twitter and MySpace.  It's really easy as long as you don't miss one thing.  If you don't follow it exactly, you don't get paid.

I'm sure there are other programs and I'll keep adding if I find more.

Stay tuned for my next post which will discuss blogging and finding items to review and giveaway.

Possible Giveaways: Two Formal (Prom) Dresses Brand New

My oldest bought two prom dresses that were around $180 each.  They are size 8 and one is black and white and one is a cream color.  I'll post pictures but I figured I'd see if there was any interest in a giveaway of these?  Has anyone tried to give away a size specific dress and was it successful?  They are just sitting in her closet with the tags still on them.

Census: Numbers Do Matter & Deadline is Tomorrow 4/16

The final day for people to mail in their completed Census form is tomorrow, Friday the 16th.  What happens if they do not remember to send it in?  It ends up costing the tax-payers more money to complete the Census process.  Here are the messages we’d like to get out to parents (please feel free to use the attached graphic):

o    For every 1 percent increase in the national participation rate by mail, the Census Bureau saves taxpayers $85 million by not having to send census takers door to door to households that failed to return the census form.  If every household mailed back its 2010 Census form, taxpayers could reduce the cost of taking the census and save $1.5 billion.
o    It costs the government just 42 cents for a postage paid envelope when a household mails back the form but costs on average about $57 per household to send a census taker.
o    April 16th is the last day to return your Census form!

Here is some additional information that explains the importance of capturing all your information to include every child:

Every child loves a good game of hide and seek. There are the fun butterflies they get in their tummies when they're waiting to be discovered and the pride they feel when they're able to count to ten and then yelling, "Ready or not, here I come!"

But children who are hidden from the U.S. Census counts (taken only once every 10 years) are not a laughing matter.  So, ready or not, here comes 2010 Census ... and you have an important role to play!
Many parents may not realize the importance of accurately reporting the number of children in their family, including newborns.  The truth is that the undercount of children means that we do not get a true picture of our nation and our communities do not get their rightful share of public funds

Why Children Count Too

Children have been undercounted in every census since the first one in 1790. Local communities rely on census information in planning for schools, child care, health and other critical services. Babies need to be counted today, so they can benefit tomorrow from community services.

Census counts are used, in whole or in part, for more than 140 programs that distribute more than $400 billion of federal funds to states and localities, including such child-focused programs as:

  • Special Education Grants to states ($10.8 billion)
  • Head Start ($6.9 billion)
  • State Children's Health Insurance Program ($5.9 billion)
  • Foster Care Title IV-E ($4.7 billion)
  • Improving Teacher Quality State Grants ($2.9 billion)

Unlike adults, who may bear some responsibility for making sure they are counted in the Census, children are dependent on others to make sure they are included.  Yet in 1980, 1990, and 2000, Census Bureau data show children, particularly young children, are one of the groups most likely to be missed in the Census.  In fact, in the 2000 Census, there was a net undercount of more than 1 million children under age 10.

Dora button

Also, featuring Dora the Explorer, the popular children's cartoon character, the Census Bureau has teamed up with Nickelodeon to create a toolkit with resources to help you spread the word to your readers or community. Please visit http://2010.census.gov/partners/toolkits/toolkits-dora.php to download the children's fact sheet and web buttons.

Global Influence is working with 2010 Census to help spread this important message.  We need your help to make sure that every child is reported so they can receive the services they will need in the future.

When playing hide and seek your children have the opportunity to be found after ten seconds.

The Census only comes around every ten years so make sure you sent your Census form back in and include all your children!
